While the full scope of learning begins to become more academic, we affirm that play is still essential to this stage of learning. Lessons are designed for various pacing and learning styles while at the same time challenging the growing knowledge of these children. Learning to read becomes more formalized at this level.

Project-Based Learning is the vehicle by which our students will learn the skills vital to their success in the 21st century, such as Creativity, Character, Critical Thinking, Communication and Collaboration.  It involves students moving from the passenger seat to the driver’s seat.  It begins with a driving question that is content driven.  For example, “How do caterpillars become butterflies?”

As students pursue the answer to this question the teacher encourages voice and choice, engages students in in-depth inquiry, incorporates revision and reflection and celebrates by having a publicly presented product.   Often this is a celebration in which the students present their completed project to parents, peers, representatives of the community or other interested parties.  It is a celebration of what they gained in terms of knowledge and skills—and pride.

We maintain a small teacher-student ratio of 1:11 in the academic classroom on average. This ratio allows for teachers to respect students’ individual differences and set challenging but achievable goals for each student.

Each day children are engaged for a sustained period of time in:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Math Workshops
  • Project Work: Integrated work that focuses on helping students achieve science, social studies, and technology goals

Each week children attend music, Spanish, engineering, exercise, board games, Godly play, library and art classes. Through these special classes, children develop skills and concepts in each area. Working in collaboration with classroom teachers, enrichment teachers frequently integrate art, music, and engineering concepts into classroom project work.

Half-day and full-day kindergarten are available.
