Hello! My name is Ms. Kelsey and I work in the 2 1/2 to 3 year-old room at Wichita Friends School. Every day, I feel like my kids come in with excitement about learning and we have so much fun in just the short time we are here together.
My students very much enjoy our Zoo Phonics curriculum that we work with daily. It brings me great joy seeing them get excited about learning the letters of the alphabet. Each letter of the alphabet has an animal that starts with the letter, and we have a fun silly action and tune that goes along with each letter. We go through one letter a week, and we sing our song with it and the kids love it! I even hear them singing it throughout the day. Additionally, parents often ask what the actions are and what the song is so they can continue to go over them with their children at home. Furthermore, all our shapes and numbers have songs and actions to go with them too. The kids just love to sing!
Learning does not always have to be pencil and paper or tests and assignments. These kids learn so much every day by creative and discovery play and by using their imagination that they do not even realize they are learning. They are learning to become independent children with hanging up their own coats and back packs, putting their water bottle on the Hydration Station, putting their belongings where they belong, using the restroom, and washing their hands. Learning our classroom routines and procedures is a plus for the students to gain independence and help things run smoothly.
It is not just the students who are learning. I, too, am learning so much from them every day we are together. I like learning their likes and dislikes, and just growing a bond with them. They have all become a part of my family and I love them just as they were my own. We are a very close family-oriented school.
